The 1st FIS International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition, was held virtually (online) from 6 June to 19 June 2022. The Competition was hosted by Firdaous Integrated Services (FIS), in partnership with the Faculty of Law, Kwara State University and Adekunle Ajasin University.

This year’s Competition saw eighteen African teams registering to Participate (University of Lay Adventists of Kigali, University of Rwanda, American University of Nigeria, Kampala International University, Uganda Christian University, Moi University, University of Forthare, University of Dar es Salaam, Moshi Co-orperative University, Islamic University in Uganda, Ahmadu Bello University, Adekunle Ajasin University, Bahir Dar University, University of Lusaka, Kwara State University, University of Ilorin, Bishop Stuart University, and University of Juba. regrettably, only seven teams submitted memorials thus making them the teams to participate in the oral phase of the competition. 

The team from University of Ilorin, Nigeria consisting of Islamiat Kolawole and Opoyemi Opoola, claimed the title as 2022 winners. The runner-up team was Bahir Dar University,  Ethiopia comprising of Lidiya Desalegn and Hawi Weyo.

The FIS African Moot Court Competition,  focuses on International Humanitarian Law specifically within he African Context as part of the thematic areas of FIS on conflict resolution. The moot had been planned to be hosted in person. However, and in light of the current global pandemic, this first edition took place virtually with optimism that subsequent editions will be in person. The two teams made it to the final round by advancing through grueling preliminary rounds of seven teams (Kampala International University, Adekunle Ajasin University, University of Juba, University of Ilorin, University of Lusaka, Kwara State University,  and Bahir Dar University) competing against each other. Six teams (Kampala International University, Adekunle Ajasin University, University of Juba, University of Ilorin, University of Lusaka,  and Bahir Dar University) progressed to the quater-finals. The three teams that won their rounds had an automatic place in the Semi final and the team that lost with the highest points in the Quater-Final occupied the fourth place, bringing to a total of four teams (Adekunle Ajasin University, University of Juba, University of Ilorin,  and Bahir Dar University) in the semi finals. The competition culminated in the final round on 19 June 2022 with the two finalists.

The final round on 19 June was presided over by an esteemed panel of two judges; Adjunct Professor Sebastian Lafrance and Dr Srikant Parthasarathy, both of whom have extensive experience in judging moot courts competitions across the world. 

In the spirit of driving an African Agenda by finding African solutions on African problems in this case conflict resolution, the FIS Moot brought together university students from 5 countries in Africa and judges from different parts of the world.
